The Duke World Food Policy Center’s Director of Strategic Initiatives – Jen Zuckerman – spoke at the Third Campus Food Security Symposium at Duke University, organized by the Campus Pantry Collaborative on March 18, 2022.
Zuckerman’s presentation, titled Why Food Justice for Food Security?, framed food justice as defined by Hislop (2014) as “the struggle against racism, exploitation, and oppression taking place within the food system that addresses inequality’s root causes both within and beyond the food chain.” She defined food insecurity, the typical strategies for addressing this issue, and then unwinds the history of policy and practice that have created and maintain the inequities in the food system especially experienced by communities of color. She also explored food justice as a path to food security, focused on shifting and sharing power and decision making with systemically marginalized communities.
